Welcome to U-13 Team Black!
by posted 02/25/2021

Welcome to the 2021 U-13 Girls Lacrosse Season!

Adam Corbeil and I (Mindy Gyllenborg) are your coaches for the season. We are psyched to play some lacrosse, learn some lacrosse, and have some fun! This is a long email--there is so much team information as well as information from the league--so hunker down, pull out your calendar and your to-do list.

Here's the plan starting with basics first:

Practice Schedule: We will have two practices per week starting on March 2nd (yes, you read that correctly...lacrosse season starts next week!).  Practices for all of U-13 will be on Tuesday and Thursday. See attached schedule. We start the season on the Tower Turf and then in April we will head to the Village Fields. When on the Tower Turf, drop off and pick-up each week should ALWAYS be at the Cornell Road loop (when players arrive we will be taking attendance and confirming COVID safe and we will dismiss players from practice as a team).

Weather/cancellations: Please always check your email if the weather is questionable before a practice--we do our best to give you as much notice as possible but our team "rule" is that we have regular practice if the town fields are "open". The Marblehead field status is available online here: http://www.marblehead.org/index.aspx?nid=622 or via the league site, www.mhdgirlslax.org

Games: Games will be on Sundays beginning April 11th - June 6th. There is no lacrosse on Memorial Day weekend (5/30). The game schedule has not yet been finalized but we will keep you posted (typically there are 4 home games and 4 away games). All home games are played at Village School Middle Field.

Please: Players are expected to arrive 30 minutes early for all games READY to go!

Equipment/Uniforms: All players must have a lacrosse stick (no fiddle stick) that is an appropriate length, cleats, protective goggles and a mouth guard (mouth guards should be molded and have nothing protruding from the mouth)--we can not allow your child to participate without proper safety equipment. All players are required to wear a league jersey (provided by MHD Girls Lacrosse), a black skort/shorts and lacrosse socks for games (skort/shorts and socks purchased by parents--they are sold at the Marblehead Sports Shop). Any undergarment worn under uniform should be black.  Heather Bush, who is responsible for uniforms for the league, will be following up with further details.

Players should bring a water bottle and appropriate layers. No jewelry/earrings for safety reasons. Refs are very strict about the jewelry/earring rule. They will not allow taping jewelry unless it is a medical charm.

COVID Policies: There will be details from the league about all COVID protocols. Stay tuned. Bottom line: Players are required to mask up at all times. If taking a water break, players will be encouraged to step away from the team.  We will be asking each player at arrival to the field if they are exhibiting any symptoms or have had close contacts etc.  Only one spectator allowed per player for games.

Communication: All communications will come via email, and you can expect a weekly email to outline any schedule updates. If you wish to add or change emails, please log in to www.mhdgirlslax.org and make updates. Coaches cannot make changes to individual records. The team roster can be found on the mhdgirlslax.org website on the U13 Black team page.

Attendance: If your daughter can't be at a practice or a game, please let us know. (  or 781.696.3485). And, look at your calendar now--we do have practice and games scheduled during school vacation week.

Checking in: Is there anything we should know about your player? Fill us in. The better we get to know each player, the better we can connect as a team!

OK, now for the general information from the league... Please go over this information with your player in advance of our first practice.

MHD GIRLS LAX MISSION STATEMENT: The Mission of Marblehead Girls Youth Lacrosse is to promote girls youth lacrosse in an environment that emphasizes fun, while developing skills, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and integrity. We follow all rules and regulations as set forth by US Lacrosse. We strive to always honor the game.

BASIC INFO: Marblehead 5th and 6th grade teams participate in the Founders Lacrosse League. U13 teams play 12 v 12 plus a goalie. This age group plays 8 games throughout the season. The standard field positions for this age is 4 attack, 4 defense, 3 midfield, plus a goalie.

TEAM CULTURE: (please read these to your player)
Here's how we will succeed:
1. Effort is everything.
2. We play against other teams, not each other.  Support each other.
3. We value contributions more than complaints. Complaints define problems; contributions solve them.

YOUR COACHES:

Adam Corbeil

Adam Corbeil moved to Marblehead with his family in 2013 and has a daughter, Addie CoPeeps, on the team.  Adam grew up playing a variety of sports at the youth, high school and intercollegiate level.  In addition to more than 10 years of experience coaching at the youth and high school levels, he is also the Director of Cambridge Recreation.  He uses sports as a unifying force and a platform for learning and youth development.  As he enters his 6th year with MHDGIRLSLAX he hopes to ensure that skills developed on the field are carried by each player as they move through life off the field.

Mindy Gyllenborg

Mindy Gyllenborg loves sports--loves to play, loves to coach and loves to watch (especially her two children, Connor (13) and Nina (11).  She believes that playing on a team has so many benefits beyond the actual sport.  Effort is a word that you'll hear Mindy use a lot.  Over the season, her overall goal as a coach is to connect with each player individually and get each player to love the game and improve their skills. Mindy has been coaching lacrosse for 5+ years. She played soccer at Union College and also coaches soccer, basketball and softball.

Would you like to help out this year? Do you have a talent or skill that could help our team? If so, please let us know how by emailing

We are so excited to start playing soon! Please encourage your player to start practicing--wall ball/rebounder every day!  Go Team Black!

Best,
